The making verbs — create, generate, seed, merge, enhance. How new things enter the world.
A doing, considered as a thing. The moment a capacity stops being potential and moves.
To put with what is already there. Addition changes the whole without altering what was there before.
A stage, a raised platform — the built place a thing is performed from, from ard, "high." Irish, ardán. The floor is raised so the telling can be seen; what is made on it is not the stage's, and the stage is what makes it visible.
How parts have been placed in relation to each other. Arrangement carries meaning that the parts do not.
Made work whose purpose is to be met rather than used. Art is not reviewed for problems; it is met to feel and to experience.
Belonging to work made to be met rather than used. Of what is judged by what it does in a body.
To bring parts together into a working whole. Assembly makes nothing new and makes the parts able to act as one.
The putting of parts into a working whole, and a gathering of people. Both are many becoming one for a purpose.
One that binds — the hand or the machine that gathers loose leaves and makes them a single object. The pages existed before; the binder makes them a book, which is a different thing than a stack.
To make by putting parts together in order. Also the particular made thing that results from one such making.
To bring separate things into one while each remains recognisable. Combination joins; it does not dissolve.
To put parts together so the whole says more than the parts. Composition is arrangement with intent.
How parts are put together so the whole says more than they do. Also a made work — both are arrangement with intent.
Of the cosmos: the whole made orderly, where every small thing belongs to one design. Names this house's design system — the single source from which every colour, token and environment descends.
The bringing forth of what was not there. Creation adds to the world rather than rearranging it.
Bringing forth what was not there. Of work whose value is in its newness rather than its correctness.
Creation — the bringing of shape into being, from cruth, "form." The act, not its product: what is cruthú is being made, and the word does not wait for it to be finished. Irish. This house's graphic studio.
The craftsman of Greek myth — a mortal, not a god — whose work was so finely joined it held without being understood. Names this house's registries — the making that keeps other making findable.
Deciding the shape of a thing before it is made. Design is where most of a thing's fate is settled.
To change a made thing after it is made. Editing improves and quietly rewrites the record of what was first said.
An addition that makes more of what a thing already is. Enhancement changes degree, not kind.
To add to a thing what makes it fuller without changing what it is. Enrichment deepens rather than replaces.
To draw a part out of a whole. What is taken keeps its meaning; what it was taken from is left changed.
Ffynnon (Welsh: a well, a spring, a fountain — the place a water rises before it is a water). The-founding-ritual's sibling at TOOL scale: that ritual founds a repo, this one founds a tool. It plants the folder with real contents (tsconfig byte-copied from the-conductor's, read from disk rather than baked in where it could drift), DRAFTS the five book entries and refuses to write them because a book is not written by a scaffold, walks the one-tier naming law, sweeps the eleven library registries while stating its own limit in its own output, and drafts the registry seed numbered into resonance-grammar and never run. Every write uses the exclusive flag, so an occupied path is refused and KEPT and running it over a half-founded tool completes it and destroys nothing. Pure charter, thin hands, zero dependencies, no clock.
Where metal is heated until it can be shaped. Also to make, and to make falsely — the same word for creation and for counterfeit.
That which illuminates — the lighting up of what was dark, told of knowing rather than of lamps. Irish, forosnaí, from the phrase imbas forosnaí: "the inspiration that illuminates," the great knowledge that illuminates, the visionary inspiration of the filí, the poets of early Ireland. Not the light and not the thing seen: the act that makes the thing visible.
Short form of generate, and of generation. A named abbreviation rather than a concept.
To bring forth what did not exist before. The same root as kin and kind - to generate is to beget.
That which brings forth new instances of a kind. It produces rather than retrieves.
To come into possession of. Retrieving what already exists, rather than making it.
To make a thing meet a person the way a person would. Humanising is care in the design, not a coat of warmth on top.
A change that makes something newly possible. Innovation is judged by what it enables, not by its novelty.
To place a thing into what already stands. First a graft: a living shoot joined into established stock so the two grow as one.
Kinema (Greek κίνημα: motion, the thing moved and the movement itself — the root the whole cinema is named from). Everything a render KNOWS about motion before a single frame is encoded, held as pure arithmetic: the frame times of a span at a FREE rate with 24 and 30 as named presets; the plan that deals every cut its frames by MASTER TIME, so a cut of one second at thirty owns exactly thirty frames, the frame standing on a boundary belongs to the NEXT cut, no frame is ever drawn twice or missed, and a cut of no length owns none; two ways of making a pixel size even, because the two bodies that forged this road rounded differently and both roundings are right about their own question; the codec walk as DATA — VP9 first, VP8 as the older fallback, and H.264 probed LAST and REFUSED BY NAME, because a machine offering only H.264 cannot write a WebM and a render must say so rather than mislabel the container; a take's sound sliced to EXACTLY the samples a cut needs, padded with silence and never stretched, laid planar as an encoder wants it; many clips summed onto one mono line at their own starts and clamped rather than wrapped; back-pressure as a GAP and never a single threshold, so the decision to stop the frame source cannot chatter on the boundary; and the encoded chunks ordered by timestamp with the picture first on a tie. Beside the arithmetic stands a surface and never an implementation: four doors — a video encoder, an audio encoder, a muxer, and the frames themselves — declared and supplied by nobody here, so the engine that walks them can be proven in a room with no browser in it. No codec, no container, no canvas, no disk, no network, and NO CLOCK: a moment is six numbers a consumer declares. Numbers in, numbers out.
To bring two things together until they are one and the seam is gone. Merging costs the separateness.
To bring several together into one body. Also the balance struck between sounds — both are proportions chosen.
Mynd (Old Norse: a picture, an image, a likeness; and the shape a thing has, from munda, to aim at, to have in view). A living, animating drawing held still at one instant and handed over as a picture that stands on its own. A board is moving and somebody wants a picture of it, right now, exactly as it looks — not a re-render, not an approximation from the model, the actual thing. The browser already knows the answer: a paused animation's transform is a matrix in computed style and its opacity is a number there, so the hard part is done, by the engine, for free, and all that is needed is to read it and write it down. The world group is cloned, the live tree and the clone are walked side by side, each element's COMPUTED look and place are written inline on the clone, the class names the stylesheet gave meaning to are dropped, the reader's own pan and zoom are taken off, the definitions the marks point at travel inside the same text, and the result is serialized. THE ORIGINAL IS READ AND NEVER WRITTEN. Then pure string work: the frozen markup wrapped as a standalone document at one unit to one pixel, byte-stable so the same instant gives the same characters forever; a data URL; and a paint onto a canvas that hands back the picture's bytes. Every door to the drawing machine is INJECTED through a surface of two verbs, so the whole road runs where no browser stands and the proofs walk it there with a browser written by hand. The picture is DERIVED AND NEVER STORED — not the millisecond, not the size, not the pixels — and an empty board has no picture at all and says so, rather than answering with a blank rectangle. The pixel box rounds outward so no mark ever loses an edge to a rounding.
A flat surface made to carry — the ground a thing is served on. A plate receives; what it carries is the gift.
To remove what is not wanted until only the wanted remains. Refining subtracts rather than adds.
The removing of what is not wanted until only the wanted remains. Refinement subtracts.
A small thing containing the pattern of a much larger one. Not a miniature — an instruction that unfolds.
To create or make. The Swedish verb, taken as the name of this house's board where things are thought together before they are built.
A small point of fire that can start a larger one. A spark supplies the beginning and none of the fuel.
The appearance of a god to a person — a showing, a manifestation made visible. Greek theophaneia, from theos (god) and phainein (to show). Not the god and not the belief: the moment the unseen takes a face.
To put a thing into service for what it can do. Also the custom that repeated employment hardens into.
To cross separate threads until they hold as one cloth. Nothing is added but the crossing.
The thread carried across the warp; the crossing that turns strung lines into cloth.
Effort directed at an end, and the made thing that results. Both the doing and what the doing leaves behind.
To set language down so it outlasts the saying. Writing is the act that makes a record possible.
