Clipped from miniature, ultimately Latin minium (red lead, the pigment used to rubricate illuminated manuscripts) via Italian miniatura; the word drifted to mean small only by false association with minor, never because it meant small itself.
Reduced in scale but not in substance — a smaller version that still expects to do the whole job.
