One particular occurrence of a general kind. An instance is real where the kind is only a description.
Latin instantia (a standing near, an example, urgency), from instare (to stand upon, press upon), in- (upon) + stare (to stand); one particular occurrence made to stand for the general kind it belongs to.
The kind made real: a description becomes an instance the moment it actually exists rather than merely being described.
